We have been privately owned for 34 years and recently brought on a long-term capital partner (BW Forsyth Partners) to accelerate growth.

We lead with integrity, approach our work intentionally, and build meaningful relationships with Matter families and each other.

Your Responsibilities

Do you enjoy being the person clients trust with their day-to-day financial lives? Are you the one who catches the error before anyone else does — and knows how to fix it? Do you thrive in a fast-paced, high-volume, deadline-driven work environment? Matter Family Office is looking for an experienced accounting professional with these qualities who is ready to own client relationships and help develop a growing team.

The Senior Accountant is a key client-facing role in our independent multi-family office, working side by side with internal team members, client vendors, and outside legal, financial, and tax professionals. This role owns the day-to-day relationship for a portfolio of client families and their related entities — serving as the primary point of contact on client email distribution lists — while reviewing the financial statements and bookkeeping prepared by Staff Accountants and escalating complex or sensitive matters to the Accounting Manager.

This includes responsibilities such as:

  • Serve as the primary day-to-day point of contact for an assigned book of client families, monitoring client email distribution lists and responding to routine, lower-complexity items (bill-pay questions, light reporting requests).
  • Review financial statements (P&L, Balance Sheet, net worth) and bookkeeping prepared by Staff Accountants for standard clients, ensuring accuracy before publication.
  • Review and, where needed, execute accounts payable and payroll; confirm timely and accurate processing.
  • Own budget-vs-actual analysis for assigned clients and contribute to budgeting and forecasting.
  • Participate in the firm’s rolling monthly peer-review and internal-audit process across client entities.
  • Coordinate with third parties, including vendors, bank representatives, accountants, attorneys, and financial advisors.
  • Escalate complex, strategic, or sensitive matters to the Accounting Manager with recommended solutions.
  • Mentor and provide day-to-day guidance to Staff Accountants and support their development.
  • Assist in client-meeting preparation and follow-up by issuing reports and ensuring relevant tasks are completed.
  • Complete special projects as requested.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or a related field.
  • Strong bookkeeping skills, including consistent monthly data entry, account reconciliation, accurate categorization, and detailed documentation.
  • Over 2 years of current experience with QuickBooks Online and related apps (such as Bill.com, MoneyThumb Slick Connect, etc.).
  • In-depth understanding of CPA requirements for calculating quarterly estimated payments and preparing timely and accurate tax returns for clients.
  • Intermediate knowledge of partnership accounting, differences between book and tax, and estate planning mechanisms.
  • Experience with accounts receivable (AR) and accounts payable (AP) for individuals/families as well as for entities (LLCs, trusts, etc.). This includes establishing and closing vendor accounts, troubleshooting, and follow-up.
  • Strong understanding of household finances, including budgeting, bill payment, loan and investment mechanics, and cash flow management.
  • Basic knowledge of payroll for household employees, entity payroll, and general contractors, including various tax filings and requirements.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills that are clear, concise, and courteous.
  • Analytical, detail-oriented, organized, and diligent when it comes to follow-up tasks.
  • Strong desire to learn and effectively use accounting and financial reporting software.
  • Exceptional time management skills in a high-volume, fast-paced, and deadline-driven work environment.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and self-directed with a strong sense of urgency.
  • Proven ability to handle sensitive and confidential information responsibly.
  • Intermediate to advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite and Mac-based hardware/software.
  • Comfortable utilizing databases and conducting internet research.

Benefits

  • Competitive Salary and Annual Performance Based Bonus
  • Medical and Dental Health Plans
  • Supplemented Health Savings Account and Health Flexible Spending Account
  • Dependent Care Flexible Spending Account
  • Employer Supplemented Health Reimbursement Account Plan
  • Short- and Long-term disability coverage paid for by employer
  • Paid Group Life Insurance
  • Flexible 401(k) retirement benefits with employer matching
  • 10 paid holidays per year plus competitive vacation and sick leave
  • Cell phone reimbursement plan
  • Opportunity for advancement based on performance, personal growth, and cultural fit
  • Work with a team-oriented culture that supports continuing education and career growth
  • Strong support for volunteer, community, and/or industry involvement
